Yesterday I was kind of wandering around Dodong for a bit looking for a trail or some way up to the Dokdo observatory (the standard way is going on the cable car). I found a trail that took me to the KBS station, and then I wandered towards Sadong and eventually found the trail to the observatory. On the way (and quite a bit recently) I heard a bird call that sounded suspiciously like "la cucaracha." Turned out to be the Blue-and-white Flycatcher, and I recorded it. Won't be able to post it until I get back to the states, but take my word for it. I got up to the obervatory, although I didn't see Dokdo. On the way back down, I took the trail to the mineral spring and tried a bit of the water. It was like slightly metallic bubbly water, very interesting.
Today I decided to do a study on the phenology (flowering) of a few species I've seen a lot of. Took the trail up to Songinbong for the nth time and collected some data. I also saw a couple new plants including an orchid.
On a different note, I'm going to watch "Independence Day" because it's the 4th of July and I wish to see some explosions
I must admit, for a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, this place is very well signed
Unmistakable leaf shape - Populus monolifera...although I never saw the actual tree...
Dodong nestled into its pirate cove
Some nice scenery
Whit-backed Woodpecker - these guys are everywhere, and unlike other birds they seem to get that the average human has no chance of doing anything to them, so they just chill out really close by
Clinopodium multicaule
Dicliptera japonica - there are so many species that aren't even listed as being on this island
Cool - there were so many of these things that suddenly appeared today, it's like they all emerged at once
Goodyera maximowiczii - I am so excited about this you don't even know. They're always so hard to spot and usually very hidden, but it's always wonderful to see a Goodyera orchid
Viola sp. I really thought the leaf shape would help me figure out what it was, but I found nothing. Really not the season for identifying violets
Actinidia polygama
I think you can tell by now that I really like butterflies
