July 30

Yesterday I went walking along the western  part of the north coast of the island. Saw a few cool things I haven't seen yet.

Solanum lyratum

I went wandering up a path and all of a sudden came upon this huge spider that was just really awesome. I swear the bugs here are just so cool.

There was this bee (or maybe it was a fly) that looked like a cross between a hummingbird and a lobster.

Songgot

Some pretty Asteraceae flowers

Cicada. These guys just make so much noise all the time

I actually found one of the places I was looking for. Yelimwon is like a garden park that has a couple nice views. Not as educational or as well labelled as the garden I went to the other day, but it was pretty and had some cool statues.

Eclipta prostrata

Elephant rock

A cool rock outcrop

A Black-crowned Night Heron in molt. I believe this is the same one I saw in Taeha earlier in my trip

A cormorant...probably a Great Cormorant

July 27

Not much happened in the way of plants yesterday, but there are a couple things of interest. I intended to go up to the Dokdo observatory platform, but as I was walking in the direction of the trail, I saw lots of smoke coming from the general direction of the forest the trail is in, and as I neared the trailhead I saw some police officers, so I decided to just go back. On the way back, I passed the same vehicle with the National Geographic decal I'd seen a while ago. I still don't know what to make of it.

Codonopsis lanceolata - hopefully I'll be around to see this one in bloom in a couple weeks

July 26

The other day I finally went to the arboretum/garden on the island and had a chance to see a few of the endemic species I have yet to see despite my wanderings. These species must be very rare or in unreachable places in the wild. Anyways, it was wonderful, and I always love going to arboretums.

Cotoneaster wilsonii (endemic)

Asplenium scolopendrium sori

Liriope platyphylla

Pollia japonica

Salix ishidoyana (endemic)

Physocarpus insularis (endemic) - a type of ninebark

Vitex rotundifolia

Abelia insularis (endemic)

Bupleurum latissimum (endemic)

July 25

Today I went over to Tonggumi and took the road over to Namyang.

I think it's called a flat-headed leafhopper

Pyrus ussuriense

Erigeron canadensis

Salix hallaisanensis

Always nice to see alternative energy

Clerodendron trichotomum

July 24

Today I made my way up to Bongnae Falls near Jeodong. Not the most eventful day, but the falls were pretty and I got some exercise.

Thymus quinquecostatus

Flowers of Oplismenus undulatifolium - really cool flowers for a grass

The eatery on the trail to Bongnae Falls

A little baby bird. I'm not sure what this is but it's really big for a baby

And finally Bongnae Falls
