Lake 22

Took a hike to Lake 22 today and found lots of cool stuff along the trail.
I can't help but wondering at the name of the lake though...were they just not very creative or is there some kind of play on Catch 22?

Trail to Lake 22

Wax Flower aka Moneses uniflora (Pyrolaceae or Ericaceae)

"waterfall" along the trail

Heart-leaved Twayblade aka Listera cordata
Twayblade again (in the Orchid family)

Running Clubmoss aka Lycopodium clavatum

terrifying picture of a slug devouring some detritus

Parsley Fern aka Cryptogramma crispa

Rosy Twistedstalk aka Streptopus roseus

Closeup of the flower

Broad-leaved Marsh-marigold aka Caltha biflora

Fern-leaved Goldthread aka Coptis asplenifolia

Devil's Matchstick aka Pilophorus acicularis

Details about research

I am now planning to document ground cover in different types of forest on Ulleungdo by doing transects at randomly selected points on the map. I will first document dominant canopy cover in a generalized way, then I will record ground cover along transects to find the dominant ground cover types.

Yay science!

Changes

I completely redid my academic contract so it is now title Flora of Ulleung Island (because that's really what I'm doing) so I decided to rename this blog as well. The url is now: flora-of-ulleungdo.blogspot.com

I also found a permanent homestay for the island so I won't really be camping now

My studies will include:
- species profiles of plants on the island
- descriptions of ecological regions of the island
- surveys of endemic species on the island
and time permitting:
- a scientific study that I determine when I get there

Also, there may be an opportunity for me to tutor students in English, give presentations about the environmental importance of the island (like my work for NREP!), and other educational things.

Less than a month to go!

Most of this stuff is related to my Field Ecology class (with the exceptions the akebia flower illustration and the artist books)
The flower pictures were taken at Glacial Heritage Preserve, and the bugs are from my project at Capitol Forest collecting stream macroinvertebrates
