June 21 and 22

The last couple days I have been doing a little field work along with just hiking and taking pictures of plants. Yesterday I did one ground cover survey on the trail to Songinbong for practice, and today I was planning on doing two or three but halfway through my first one it started raining heavily, so I finished that one and headed back.  Glad I had my Rite in the Rain notebook!  I'm sort of going to limit myself to plots near trails because most of the island is incredibly steep so navigating to most places is out of the question.

Praying mantis

Vicia cracca (I think)

Finally got a good picture of a Japanese Wood Pigeon!  I was sitting down for a while and like five of them just flew into the tree across from me.

Flower of Styrax obassia

Callicarpa sp.
There are supposedly two species on the island and I really don't know how to tell them apart.

The other day, I came across this really spiny bush and had no idea what it could be since my guide had nothing like it.  I ended up googling "spiny bush trifoliata" and it came up with Poncirus trifoliata, which is exactly it.  Really really spiny!

Apparently this is Cryptomeria japonica, which is not in my guide either

Campanula takesimana (endemic)
just everywhere in the lower elevations

Diospyros lotus (a kind of persimmon, yum!)

Actinidia polygama (a kind of kiwi, also yum)

Cool inch worm I saw today
